Key information:

*298 people were onboard the Malaysia Airlines plane that crashed in eastern Ukraine. There were no survivors.
*Ukrainian officials claim the plane was shot down. Ukrainian, Russian and rebel leaders deny involvement.
*Flight MH17 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it crashed near the border between Ukraine and Russia.

12.52pm: UNAIDS Director Michael Sidibe, who is in Melbourne, has tweeted: "At this incredibly sad and sensitive time the IAS (International AIDS Society) stands with our international family and sends condolences to the loved ones of those who have been lost to this tragedy.
His comment comes after it was revealed that a number of the passengers on Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur were going to connect to a flight to Australia where an international AIDS/HIV conference is to be held.

12.36pm: The nationalities of 41 passengers have still not been verified. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is checking if any of those were New Zealanders or if they had links to New Zealand.

12.20pm: A woman who missed boarding the doomed Malaysia Airlines flight told Reuters she felt "physically sick" after hearing it had crashed. She says she didn't make it to the airport on time.
"I was just crying. I feel like I have been given a second chance," she says.

She told ABC News that there must of been "someone watching over us saying 'no don't get on that flight'."

12.10pm: The statement from Malaysia Airlines says "with immediate effect, all European flights operated by Malaysia Airlines will be taking alternative routes".

The airline again reiterated that the usual flight route was earlier declared safe by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

12.09pm: The number of Britons on the Malaysia Airlines crash has risen from six to nine.

12.05pm: The MH17 air crash has the third highest number of civilian casualties suffered by Australia in aviation history and the highest suffered in 54 years. Twenty seven Australians were onboard.

12.01pm: Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 had 283 passengers and 15 crew members. The airline had earlier said there were 280 passengers, but has since revised the count to include three infants, two from Malaysia and one from Indonesia.

11.59am: Ashley Abbott, a spokesperson for the New Zealand Olympic Team, says the crash has not affected any of Kiwi athletes.

11.53am: A user called Regis Crolla posted this image on Instagram, with the comment "AMS --> Kuala Lumpur --> Bali."



Several people have posted "RIP" on the image.

One user posted a comment which roughly translates to "terrible to hear especially for all the family and loved ones."

11.35am:
The National AIDS Trust has tweeted confirmation that a number of the passengers on the plane were AIDS researchers and scientists on the way to Melbourne.
 
Channel 7 is reporting that once in Kuala Lumpar the scientists would have then flown to Melbourne.
11.30am:  Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko insists the event poses a security challenge worldwide and not just in Ukraine.

"Today’s tragedy showed again that terrorism is not localised, but a world problem. And the external aggression against Ukraine is not just our problem, but a threat to European and global security," the Telegraph reported Mr Poroshenko as saying.

11.15am: More flowers and candles are laid at the Dutch embassy in Russia.

11.12am: The White House has released this photo of President Barack Obama on the phone to President Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine about the Malaysian Airlines plane crash.

11.04am: HIV/AIDS activist  Gregg Gonsalves reportedly said a number of the passengers on the plane were high-profile AIDS researchers and scientists on the way to Melbourne, Australia for the 2014 international conference.

10.52am: Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs has now officially confirmed 27 Australians were onboard.
10.42am: The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe has tweeted:

President Poroshenko earlier said he is negotiating with rebels to establish a humanitarian corridor to the site, because the crash site is in rebel-controlled Ukrainian territory.
10.40am: American Pie actor Jason Biggs has defended a joke he made on Twitter shortly after the Malaysia Airlines plane went down in the Ukraine today.
The actor wrote: "Anyone wanna buy my Malaysian Airlines frequent flier miles?"
One user wrote: "Too soon, man. Too soon.". Another wrote: "You're sick."
Jason followed the tweet saying: "In all seriousness, tho- HOW DO YOU MISTAKENLY SHOOT DOWN A COMMERCIAL PLANE?! Ugh.

10.16am: British foreign secretary Philip Hammond says: "We do believe that there were British nationals on board the flight. We are working through passenger data, cross-checking it and referencing it to establish exactly the numbers and identities of those British nationals, and as soon as we have further information we will be in contact with the families."

9.51am: A cargo worker who claims to be one of the last people to see the passengers alive has described the Flight MH17 tragedy as "one of the darkest days of my life".

In an emotional tribute on Facebook, Martijn Hoebee said the disaster had left him with an "insane headache".

9.46am: UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon has called for a "full, transparent and international investigation" of the crash, AFP reports.

Mr Ban offered condolences to the victims' families.
Britain has called for a UN-led investigation and is seeking an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the crisis in eastern Ukraine.

9.40am: New York Times journalist Sabrina Tayernise said she had come across a scene of "almost unspeakable horror".

9.28am: New Zealanders who believe they had a family member on MH17 and are unable to contact them should talk to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Consular Division on +64 4 439 8000.
Malaysia Airlines have established a Help Line in Kuala Lumpur which concerned family members are also encouraged to call +603 7884 1234.

9.26am Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says: "Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade are following up on indications that at least one New Zealand passport holder, and other passengers with New Zealand connections, may have been on board."
"The Ministry is working hard to confirm these details and make contact with the next of kin.
“Our thoughts are with all the families of those on board as they wait for news. Latest reports suggest that more than 295 people may have died in the crash.
“It is important that the matter be fully investigated and we call for independent investigators to be allowed access to the crash site,” Mr McCully says.

9.19am: According to a Kremlin statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the government in whose air space this happened bears responsibility for this terrible tragedy.
He says the tragedy would not have happened if there were peace in this land, or in any case, if Kiev had not renewed hostilities in south-eastern Ukraine.

9.10am: The Mirror reports that "on board were 154 Dutch passengers, 27 Australian, 23 Malaysian, 11 Indonesian, six from the UK, four from Germany, four from Belgium, three from the Philippines and one from Canada."

9.04am: In his speech in Detroit,  US Vice President Joe Biden says the US is working "every minute" to confirm reports that their citizens were on board.
"This is truly a grave situation. Nearly 300 souls have been lost. The families have our consolation and our prayers," he says.

He says the families need answers, and "we will get those answers".
He says he has spoken to President Poroshenko.
8.59am: The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs says there are "grave concerns" that there were a number of Australians on board MH17, according to the Guardian.

8.58am: Mr Razak says he had spoken with US President Barack Obama, and that they agreed "the investigation must not be hindered in any way".
"An international team must have full access to the crash site, and no one should interfere with the scene or move any debris, including the black box."
He says it has been a "tragic day in what has already been a tragic year for Malaysia".
"As we work to understand what happened our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those on board the flight.
"I cannot imagine what they must be going through at this painful time. The flight's passengers and crew came from many different countries, but today regardless of nationality we are all united in grief."

8.56am: Mr Razak said he has spoken with the president of Ukraine and he assured him there will be a "full, thorough and independent investigation, and Malaysian officials will be invited to take part".

8.54am: Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak says Malaysia will dispatch a special flight to Kiev carrying a disaster assistance and rescue team.

He said though Ukraine believes the plane was shot down, "at this stage Malaysia is unable to verify the cause of the tragedy, but we must and we will find out precisely what happened to this flight. No stone will be left unturned."

"If it transpires that the plane was indeed shot down, we insist that the perpetrators must swiftly be brought to justice."
He says emergency operations centres have been established and Malaysian officials have been in contact with their counterparts in the Ukraine and other countries.

8.48am: Mr Razak says Flight MH17 did not make a distress call.
He says they are in the process of notifying the next-of-kin of passengers and crew.

8.47am: Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak confirms the aircraft was a Boeing 777-200, and that the plane's route had been declared safe, and was not subject to restrictions.

8.40am: US Vice President Joe Biden says Flight MH17 was shot down. He said in a speech at the Netroots Nation conference in Detroit that it was "not an accident", saying it was "blown out of the sky".

8.32am: One person commented on Cor Pan's photo: "I can't believe this ... totally broken. Rest in peace."
Another posted: "Rest in peace Cor and Neeltje."
Cor Pan's status on Facebook is "in a relationship with Neeltje Tol."
Initially, friends had responded with joyful messages.
"Happy holidays! No crazy things though that's the gods requests!" wrote one.

8.24am: A Dutch man, Cor Pan, posted a picture of what is believed to be flight MH17 and a caption which roughly translates as "should it disappear, this is what it looks like."

8.21am: Vice-president Joe Biden says a US team will go to Ukraine "to determine what happened".

8.16am: The Telegraph earlier reported that the Ukrainian security services claimed to have intercepted conversations proving that Russia and pro-Russian separatists were responsible for downing MH17. The  Kyiv Post has now translated the conversation  released by the Ukrainian government.
The Telegraph says the first call is reportedly between a Russian military intelligence officer and a separatist commander. On the call, the officer reportedly says:"We have just shot down a plane".

8.08am: Britain is reportedly requesting a meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the downing of the Malaysia Airlines aircraft.

8.01am: Laurent Fabius, France's Minister of Foreign Affairs, confirmed to CNN that there were at least four French victims on the plane.

7.50am: New Zealand Masterchef winner and cookbook author Chelsea Winter said her husband was close to being on Flight MH17 because his flight on an earlier plane had been overbooked. She said he was the last person to board the earlier flight.

7.32am: The head of Ukrainian Emergency Situations says search efforts at the crash scene are being hampered by "armed terrorists".


7.31am: The International Air Transport Association, the global airline body based in Geneva, says: "Based on the information currently available, it is believed that the airspace that the aircraft was traversing was not subject to restrictions."

curity services apparently released what they say are recordings proving that Russian military intelligence ordered MH17 to be shot down. These have since been removed from YouTube.

7.20am: O'Brien, who is a reporter for Al Jazeera, told TV ONE's Breakfast there are claims from separatists that they have found the black box and that they are going to give it to Moscow.
She says the separatists say they don't have the weapons for this kind of attack, but she says there has been some information that they have taken these weapons from the Ukrainian army in the heavy battles.

7.18am: Alexi O'Brien says a local military commander posted "a plane has been shot down we warned you about flying above our area and apparently this tweet has since been deleted so everybody is pointing the finger at everybody else."

The Telegraph says the message on Igor Stelkov's Vkontakte page  was posted at 17:50 Moscow time, about an hour before news of the 777 crash broke:

"Message from the militia: In the district of Torez an An-26 was just shot down. It crashed somewhere near the Progress mine. We warned them not to fly in "our skies". Here is video confirmation of the latest "fallen bird". The bird landed outside the residential zone, no peaceful civilians were injured."

7.17am: Former ONE News reporter Alexi O'Brien is at the scene and she says there is very tight security there. She says it is quite intimidating.

7.10am: Air France said it had "taken the decision to no longer fly over eastern Ukraine as soon as it heard of the event."

6.59am: US Senator John McCain says there will be "hell to pay" if it turned out that the Malaysia Airlines passenger plane was shot down by Russia or separatists.

6.57am: "I was working in the field on my tractor when I heard the sound of a plane and then a bang and shots," a witness called Vladimir told Reuters.

"Then I saw the plane hit the ground and break in two. There was thick black smoke."

6.54am: Russia's emergency services have reportedly asked the Ukrainian government for permission to work at the crash site.

— April 20, 1978: Korean Airlines Flight 902, which diverted from its planned course on a flight from Paris to Seoul and strayed over the Soviet Union. After being fired upon by an interceptor aircraft, the crew made a forced landing at night on the surface of a frozen lake. Two of the 97 passengers were killed by the hostile fire.

— September 1, 1983: Korean Air Lines Flight 007 shot down by at least one Soviet air-to-air missile after the 747 had strayed into Soviet airspace. All 240 passengers and 29 crew were killed.

— July 3, 1988: Iran Air Flight 655 Aircraft was shot down by a surface to air missile from the American naval vessel U.S.S. Vincennes. All 16 crew and 274 passengers were killed.

6.48am: British Airways has joined the growing list of airliners avoiding Ukrainian airspace, as has Turkish Airlines and Russia's Aeroflot.

6.44am: A New York Times reporter at the scene says many of the bodies were still in their seat belts.

"British officials were due to meet this evening to take stock of the Malaysian air disaster, including the possibility that British nationals were on board. It is likely that meeting will be largely practical and an assessment of what is known, as opposed to any ministerial political action."

6.36am: Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov has called allegations that Russia was involved in the downing of MH17 "stupidity", the Guardian reports.

6.30am: The plane appeared to have broken up before impact and the burning wreckage was scattered over a wide area.

6.28am: Separatist leader Andrei Purgin told The Associated Press that he was certain that Ukrainian troops had shot the plane down but gave no explanation or proof for his statement.

6.26am: An Associated Press journalist counted at least 22 bodies at the crash site 40 kilometres from the Russian border.
6.24am: Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called the downing an act of terrorism and called for an international investigation into the crash.

Mr Poroshenko said his country's armed forces didn't shoot at any airborne targets.
"We do not exclude that this plane was shot down, and we stress that the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not take action against any airborne targets," he said.
"We are sure that those who are guilty in this tragedy will be held responsible."

6.22am: Barack Obama says the US government is trying to establish whether American citizens on board.

6.15am:  Malaysia Airlines has released an official statement:
"Malaysia Airlines confirms it received notification from Ukrainian ATC that it had lost contact with flight MH17 at 1415 (GMT) at 30km from Tamak waypoint, approximately 50km from the Russia-Ukraine border.
Flight MH17 operated on a Boeing 777 departed Amsterdam at 12.15pm (Amsterdam local time) and was estimated to arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 6.10 am (Malaysia local time) the next day.
The flight was carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew onboard.

6.14am: New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of the plane crash and is following up with overseas embassies and Malyasian Airlines to try and ascertain whether there are any New Zealanders on board.

6.11am: Malaysia Airlines tweeted that it lost contact with one of its flights as it was travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur over Ukrainian airspace.

BACKGROUND: A Malaysia Airlines plane has crashed in eastern Ukraine.
Malaysia Airlines confirmed that it received notification from Ukrainian aviation authorities that it had lost contact with flight MH17 at 1415 GMT some 30 kilometres from Tamak waypoint, approximately 50km from the Russia-Ukraine border.
It said the plane had 280 passengers and 15 crew aboard a Boeing 777 that left Amsterdam at 12.15pm (local time) and was to arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 6.10am Friday.
