  • Ukraine is claiming the Malaysia Airlines plane was shot down. Here is the statement from its Foreign Ministry:
large passenger aircraft Boeing 777, performing a flight between Amsterdam and
Kuala Lumpur, was shot down in the eastern part of Ukraine.
According to the General Staff of Ukrainian Armed Forces, the airplane was shot down by
the Russian Buk missile system as the liner was flying at an altitude of 10,000
    meters.
Ukraine has no long-range air defence missile systems in this area.
The plane was shot down, because the Russian air defence systems was affording
protection to Russian mercenaries and terrorists in this area.
Ukraine will present the evidence of Russian military involvement into the Boeing
    crash.

Ukrainian authorities report that bodies and debris are spread across a 10 mile distance and that all 295 passengers and crew are believed dead.  Ukrainian military analysts believe a Russian-made SA-17 Grizzly surface-to-air missile system destroyed the plane.
“If true, this represents a significant escalation, as the SA-17 is a sophisticated system requiring a
whole suite of radar and command vehicles.”
Militants from the Donetsk People’s Republic have secured the site and are refusing access to
    outsiders.

  • As soon as we confirm whether there were Americans aboard, we'll post it here.

  • Interfax is reporting that Russian militants have seized the black box of the plane.
    by Colleen.Curry 2:31 AM
  • The Russian militants say they will turn the black box recorders from the Malaysia Flight over to Moscow for investigation, according to Interfax.

ABC News producer Matt Hosford points out that this is significant because whomever has possession of the data recorder and cockpit voice recorder controls the data.
    by Colleen.Curry 2:33 AM
  • The UK is calling for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the flight.

Meanwhile, U.S. Senators are gathering now for a meeting of the Intelligence Committee for a briefing on the crash. Senators John McCain and Mark Udall both commented to ABC News:

Sen. John McCain: "IF it has been shot down by either of the
'separatists' it has a profound effect on all of our relations with Russia.
We would now have to give arms to the Ukrainian government and have severe sanctions."

Sen. Mark Udall:  The shocking destruction of Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 with 295 people aboard has dramatically increased tensions in an already-volatile region, and all sides must take immediate steps to avoid further escalation... President Putin should pull his forces back from the Ukrainian border and suspend Russian support for the separatist forces currently operating in Ukraine."

    by Colleen.Curry 2:37 AM
  • President Obama also made remarks on the incident at a stop in Delaware today:
“Before I begin, obviously the world is watching reports of a downed passenger jet near the Russia-Ukraine border. And it looks like it may be a terrible tragedy. Right now, we’re working to determine whether there were American citizens onboard. That is our first priority, and I’ve directed my national security team to stay in close contact with the Ukrainian government. The United States will offer any assistance we can to help determine what happened and why. And as a country, our thoughts and prayers are with all the families of the passengers, wherever they call home.

  • A few odds and ends we haven't posted yet:

    • Ukraine states that their armed forces did not shoot the plane down. Ukraine’s President Poroshenko says “we are not calling it an accident, or a disaster, but an act of terrorism”
    • The FAA issued a warning to US airlines, operators and pilots prohibiting flights in the airspace over Simferopole (in Crimea) beginning in April 23, 2014 and extending for one year. The notice was issued because Russia had announced it would take control over airspace that Ukraine said it was continuing to control
    • The Malaysia Boeing 777 flying from Amsterdam to KL would have been heavily loaded with fuel for the 11.5 hour flight, something in the neighborhood of about 190,000 pounds of fuel. Since the plane flew for under two hours before it crashed, it would have still had about 150,000 pounds.
    • There were no Russian citizens on board. The U.S. State Department says it’s investigating whether any US citizens were on board.
